After a long stretch of travel, full days, work projects, and creative output, my body is whispering (okay, maybe insisting): It’s time to rest.
I used to resist that whisper. I’d try to keep my momentum, afraid that slowing down would undo my progress. But over the years, I’ve learned that rest is not the opposite of productivity, it’s part of it.
Nature Already Knows the Way
The tide rolls in. The tide rolls out.
The moon waxes. The moon wanes.
Seasons cycle from bloom to harvest to stillness.
We, too, are cyclical beings. Our nervous systems, our energy, even our creativity thrive in phases. Pushing without pause breaks the rhythm; honoring the ebb and flow keeps it alive.
And here’s the thing about the ocean: when the wave recedes, it’s not gone. It’s gathering strength, building momentum, pulling energy into itself so it can return with power. Rest is the same. It’s not doing nothing, it’s being in a space of potential.
Work as a Sacred Output
When we’re in our “output” phase (the meetings, the writing, the teaching, the doing) our energy is directed outward. We share our skills, our vision, our presence. This is beautiful and necessary. It’s when we get to be of service, to contribute.
But service is sustainable only when it’s balanced with deep replenishment.
Rest as a Sacred Input
Rest isn’t a reward for finishing your to-do list. It’s an essential ingredient in the work itself. Just like exhaling without inhaling would quickly run us out of breath, giving without receiving runs us out of energy.
Rest can look like stillness, but it can also be quiet joy: a slow walk at sunset, hands wrapped around tea, lying on the floor listening to music. It’s anything that lets your system shift from doing to being.
In that space of potential, the next wave is forming.
Mindfulness Between the Phases
The magic is in noticing the transitions.
- When you’ve just finished a big project, take a moment to feel the exhale.
- When you sense energy returning, greet it with curiosity before rushing ahead.
Mindfulness turns these natural shifts into conscious rituals, and conscious rituals turn our work and rest into an art form.
A Gentle Reminder 🌸
If you’re in your ebb right now, you’re not falling behind. You’re gathering. You’re tending the roots so the next season can bloom strong.
The next time your body calls for rest, trust that you’re not stepping away from your path, you’re deepening it, standing in the quiet fullness of the wave before it rises.
